0.000000 1.000000 All right.
1.000000 2.300000 Here we go.
2.300000 4.300000 Recite something.
4.300000 5.300000 Recite something.
5.300000 6.300000 Okay.
6.300000 7.820000 Let's do a scripture verse.
7.820000 13.760000 Verse Timothy 112, which is my favorite verse, is I think Jesus Christ our Lord, who has
13.760000 18.480000 given me strength, that He would consider me trustworthy, appointing me to His service.
18.480000 19.480000 Okay.
19.480000 23.640000 I think that's a good way to open our recording.
23.640000 26.800000 Oh, especially since it has the name of our podcast.
26.800000 30.560000 I have trust where it does.
30.560000 32.360000 Is God trustworthy?
32.360000 37.000000 Hi, I'm Sarah, and I'm Mary Beth.
37.000000 42.120000 Join us as we seek to answer this question through whole-hearted conversation.
42.120000 47.000000 Discover the wit and wisdom that comes from being anchored in Christ and connected to
47.000000 48.600000 one another.
48.600000 62.720000 This is Trustworthy.
62.720000 66.800000 Oh, hey there, Sara Boninu.
66.800000 68.640000 Hey there, Sarah, flowers.
68.640000 71.040000 Hey, I'm here too.
71.040000 72.040000 Yeah.
72.040000 73.040000 My name is Sarah.
73.040000 74.040000 My name is Sarah.
74.040000 75.040000 Sarah, which was Sarah Bread.
75.040000 76.040000 Oh, yes.
76.040000 78.760000 It's a Mary Beth sandwich.
78.760000 79.760000 This is fun.
79.760000 81.080000 It is fun.
81.080000 86.840000 We are absolutely delighted to welcome you to Trustworthy Podcast.
86.840000 90.800000 We have hoped to have you on our show for a while.
90.800000 91.800000 Well, thank you.
91.800000 93.240000 So we're glad you're here.
93.240000 94.240000 Thank you.
94.240000 98.120000 And there are a lot of things that we could talk to you about.
98.120000 99.480000 I don't even know where to start.
99.480000 102.040000 Well, let's let people know who she is for those who might not.
102.040000 103.040000 That's a great idea.
103.040000 104.040000 No, no.
104.040000 108.300000 Since as she mentioned before, we have 2.5 million listeners.
108.300000 109.300000 Yes.
109.300000 110.300000 We were talking about that before we started recording.
110.300000 111.300000 Yes.
111.300000 112.300000 Exactly.
112.300000 117.000000 Not all of them divided by some unknown number.
117.000000 119.880000 Math is not my thing.
119.880000 123.080000 But yeah, Sara goes to church with us.
123.080000 125.640000 She is on staff there.
125.640000 128.880000 Do you want to give the 10 second other bio?
128.880000 129.880000 Sure.
129.880000 131.380000 She finished seminary in the last year.
131.380000 132.380000 Yes.
132.380000 134.220000 So that, oh my goodness.
134.220000 137.500000 So yes, I am one of the student pastors on staff.
137.500000 141.080000 I basically get paid to have fun.
141.080000 143.820000 I love hanging out with teenagers.
143.820000 146.460000 Yes, I've been in youth ministry for eight years.
146.460000 151.660000 I finished seminary a little over a year ago.
151.660000 156.140000 And while I was in seminary, I was also teaching piano and voice lessons doing full-time
156.140000 157.140000 ministry.
157.140000 160.340000 And another 10 second spiel about me is that I am married.
160.340000 163.620000 I've been married to my husband Frank for eight years.
163.620000 168.540000 I also have two amazing dogs, Daisy and Boomer, and they are my world.
168.540000 173.860000 I'm a musician, I write music, and I also love to bake.
173.860000 174.860000 So that's me.
174.860000 176.980000 And you're a Texan?
176.980000 177.980000 I am.
177.980000 178.980000 Yes.
178.980000 179.980000 I was born in Fort Worth.
179.980000 180.980000 Yep.
180.980000 181.980000 So that's also fun.
181.980000 184.320000 And you're, I'm like, how many more things can we name?
184.320000 185.320000 And you are?
185.320000 186.320000 Left-handed.
186.320000 187.320000 Yeah.
187.320000 188.320000 I am too.
188.320000 189.320000 I didn't know this.
189.320000 190.320000 Yes.
190.320000 193.360000 Maybe we can make a sandwich with lefty bread.
193.360000 194.360000 We can do that.
194.360000 195.360000 Yes.
195.360000 196.360000 Because I'm right-handed.
196.360000 197.360000 All right.
197.360000 199.360000 So it's the Sarah bread with the right-handed, whatever.
199.360000 200.360000 I don't know.
200.360000 202.840000 If only you could see us gesturing with our hands right now.
202.840000 203.840000 Right.
203.840000 204.840000 The right-handed sandwich with the left-handed bread.
204.840000 206.640000 There we go.
206.640000 210.760000 Well, we did want to have Sara Boninu on.
210.760000 212.600000 This is going to get confusing through the episode.
212.600000 216.160000 You can just call me, so my nickname in high school because there were so many Sarah's
216.160000 217.160000 was Macdonut.
217.160000 218.160000 Macdonut?
218.160000 219.160000 Yes.
219.160000 220.160000 Okay.
220.160000 224.040000 People thought it was Macdonut, and it became Macdonut as my nickname.
224.040000 225.040000 Natural progression.
225.040000 226.360000 Exactly.
226.360000 232.400000 And then now, since there is another Sarah on staff, I'm Sarah B. So you can call me whatever
232.400000 233.920000 you want, as long as it's respectful.
233.920000 234.920000 As long as it's respectful.
234.920000 236.920000 That's what I tell my students.
236.920000 239.400000 I have a question.
239.400000 240.400000 Do you like Donuts?
240.400000 241.400000 I love Donuts.
241.400000 242.400000 Okay.
242.400000 243.400000 What are your favorite Donuts?
243.400000 244.400000 Oh my gosh.
244.400000 245.400000 Anything?
245.400000 246.400000 It's chocolate, especially.
249.400000 251.400000 You have a donut with chocolate frosting.
251.400000 252.400000 Banging.
252.400000 256.400000 You had the gluten-free ones at Wanderlust in downtown California.
256.400000 257.400000 I have.
257.400000 258.400000 I have.
258.400000 259.400000 They are delicious.
259.400000 260.400000 Oh, that sounds exciting.
260.400000 261.400000 It is exciting.
261.400000 262.400000 There's donuts.
262.400000 267.440000 The fractured prune is from Ocean City originally, but the hot dipped donuts.
267.440000 269.640000 And they have a donut called the Elvis.
269.640000 272.480000 I don't even think it's still on the menu, but it used to be.
272.480000 278.280000 And it's a hot donut dipped in banana with peanut butter chips on top.
278.280000 279.280000 Alrighty.
279.280000 282.120000 It's remarkable.
282.120000 284.120000 Could I eat it, though?
284.120000 285.920000 I guess if it were gluten-free.
285.920000 286.920000 Okay.
286.920000 287.920000 Yeah.
287.920000 290.520000 Listen, another thing you need to know about me is that I love food.
290.520000 294.600000 And so if I see food or hear it, that's what I want.
294.600000 295.600000 Oh.
295.600000 299.240000 I just didn't know I could be watching TV and a commercial comes on.
299.240000 300.840000 I could have my dinner in my lap.
300.840000 304.360000 And if I see like lasagna or something on the screen, I'm like, I don't want this.
304.360000 305.360000 I want lasagna.
305.360000 307.880000 Oh, see, you're suggestible.
307.880000 312.000000 I don't give in to peer pressure, but when it comes to food, only stomach pressure.
312.000000 313.000000 Oh, gosh.
313.000000 314.000000 Yeah.
314.000000 315.000000 All bets are off.
315.000000 316.000000 Wow.
316.000000 317.000000 Mm-hmm.
317.000000 318.000000 That's really interesting.
318.000000 319.000000 Yeah.
319.000000 320.000000 That's fun fact.
320.000000 321.000000 I like food.
321.000000 322.000000 Are you two?
322.000000 323.000000 I was with a KDS today.
323.000000 324.000000 Food.
324.000000 325.000000 I love the lamp
325.000000 326.000000 Sorry.
326.000000 327.000000 I'm heavy on the movie.
327.000000 328.000000 Quotes today.
328.000000 329.000000 Continue.
329.000000 330.000000 I was with a donut.
330.000000 331.000000 Yes.
331.000000 332.000000 I was with a student.
332.000000 333.000000 She was five yesterday.
333.000000 335.200000 And she was like, Miss Sarah, which do you like more?
335.200000 336.200000 Humans are food.
336.200000 339.480000 And I was like, girl, this is a toughy.
339.480000 340.120000 I'm going with food.
340.120000 342.120000 I love food.
342.120000 343.280000 We need both to survive.
343.280000 345.120000 And I was like, you can't have one without the other.
345.120000 346.120000 Yeah.
346.120000 347.120000 Great.
347.120000 349.240000 Is this my base flesh talking?
349.240000 353.360000 Or is this like the person that I strive to be that God is calling me to be?
353.360000 354.360000 What do I answer?
354.360000 355.360000 Mm-hmm.
355.360000 360.560000 I was like, the sinner in me is going to pick food every time.
360.560000 361.560000 Mm-hmm.
361.560000 368.120000 Well, when Sarah and I were talking about having you on the podcast, there were a lot of
368.120000 369.120000 different topics.
369.120000 371.360000 Maybe we should have added food to the list.
371.360000 372.360000 Next time.
372.360000 373.360000 Next time.
373.360000 374.360000 There can be.
374.360000 375.360000 Next time.
375.360000 376.360000 But I know where you live.
376.360000 377.360000 It's right.
377.360000 378.360000 You do now.
378.360000 379.360000 You might just show up or recording before.
379.360000 380.360000 That's true.
380.360000 381.360000 Yeah.
381.360000 386.200000 But we wanted to talk today about a little thing called key chain leadership.
386.200000 388.080000 Let's do it.
388.080000 391.280000 And we both benefited from when you talked about this recently.
391.280000 397.800000 It is, I'm not exaggerating, these three points of your sermon have stuck in my head since
397.800000 398.800000 that Sunday.
398.800000 399.800000 Thank you.
399.800000 400.800000 More so than like any other sermons I've heard.
400.800000 401.800000 So well done.
401.800000 402.800000 Thank you very much.
402.800000 406.360000 And also, I think it's a very timely, appropriate message.
406.360000 407.360000 Yeah.
407.360000 411.440000 We were doing a whole series on kind of raising up the next generation of the church and
411.440000 416.120000 engaging them now because they are part of the church now.
416.120000 418.160000 And this was part of the discussion.
418.160000 423.200000 And I think Sarah Flowers has been able to already apply it in some areas.
423.200000 424.200000 That's great.
424.200000 425.200000 Yeah.
425.200000 426.200000 Working on applying it.
426.200000 427.200000 Yeah.
427.200000 429.360000 So I do some other work with sports and kids.
429.360000 434.480000 And yeah, we're working on implementing some of these concepts with our student athletes,
434.480000 441.440000 which so far has been met with a lot of enthusiasm and working on rolling that out.
441.440000 444.840000 But I think we should start at the beginning.
444.840000 450.640000 We know less about this than you do, but I'll just give a little introduction in our church.
450.640000 455.480000 We are working through the concepts of a program that came from Fuller Youth Institute.
455.480000 457.560000 It's called Growing Young.
457.560000 465.960000 And it's about discipling and bringing along our children and the next generation to be
465.960000 471.760000 the church, which they are now just recognizing that and equipping them to lead the body of Christ
471.760000 473.760000 in the future.
473.760000 479.000000 And one of the parts of this growing young is key chain leadership.
479.000000 484.560000 And key chain leadership is some things and it's not some other things.
484.560000 490.600000 So I am going to test you because I have a direct quote from your sermon.
490.600000 491.600000 Oh, great.
491.600000 497.520000 And I have a direct quote from Johnny Johnston's sermon, okay, who is the campus pastor for our
497.520000 507.520000 generous fellow occasion? And I would like to know Sarah B. McDonald, what is key chain
507.520000 508.520000 leadership?
508.520000 509.520000 All right.
509.520000 516.720000 So basically in a nutshell, key chain leadership is handing over responsibilities to the younger
516.720000 517.720000 generation.
517.720000 519.960000 And it doesn't just have to be the younger generation.
519.960000 522.560000 That's just who we're trying to focus on right now.
522.560000 527.480000 So that means we as the adults, we as the leaders are not the ones hoarding all the
527.480000 533.040000 responsibilities we got here because others before us poured into us.
533.040000 536.600000 And so it's now up to us to do that for the next generation.
536.600000 539.680000 So it's not us always being the ones doing the teaching.
539.680000 545.360000 It's not us always being the ones to lead the small groups or to set up or even to do something
545.360000 548.360000 as simple as give announcements or lead games.
548.360000 554.720000 It's us seeing the skills and the talents and the God given gifts in these students and
554.720000 558.460000 saying, where can you use those to help other people?
558.460000 563.160000 Where can you use those to grow in your leadership and draw closer to Jesus?
563.160000 569.600000 As I was listening to your sermon, our church does put up the audio from the sermon.
569.600000 573.200000 So we'll have some links to that in our show notes.
573.200000 580.160000 One of the things that strikes me about this is there's a lot of obedience that is involved.
580.160000 589.340000 We have been told by God in the scriptures that we are given gifts, that we are given the
589.340000 594.660000 abilities to be able to do certain things to some he gives the gift of prophecy to some
594.660000 600.440000 he gives the gift of encouragement to some he gives the gifts of song preaching.
600.440000 604.800000 Whatever our gifts are, we are encouraged to use them.
604.800000 611.480000 So that's kind of a baseline in this, but that is obedience.
611.480000 619.120000 There are so many times that we sit in this attitude of, "Oh, I either don't have gifts
619.120000 620.640000 or I can't do that.
620.640000 622.200000 I'm not that person."
622.200000 625.280000 So it can be the sin of comparison, which is something that Mary Beth and I have talked
625.280000 626.360000 about before.
626.360000 632.040000 It could be any number of things that kind of keeps us from using our gifts.
632.040000 636.500000 That is a long lead up to a question.
636.500000 645.520000 In your sermon, you did talk about some of these ways that we can be lulled into or tricked
645.520000 648.960000 into not using our abilities.
648.960000 656.320000 If you can, tell me some of the ways that you have struggled in that area.
656.320000 657.320000 All right.
657.320000 658.320000 Do you have time?
658.320000 659.320000 Oh my gosh.
659.320000 660.320000 Got another 20 minutes.
660.320000 661.320000 Okay, great.
661.320000 664.360000 So I'll kind of start by saying this.
664.360000 665.680000 I grew up in the church.
665.680000 671.320000 My parents have been ministers and all my life I was at church doing things.
671.320000 674.440000 So in a way, key chain leadership started within me at a young age.
674.440000 680.400000 I knew when I was 14, I wanted to go into ministry, youth ministry, but that did not mean that
680.400000 682.840000 I had the gifts and the skills already prepared.
682.840000 687.320000 I had so many great people pouring into me, seeing those God-given gifts and helping me
687.320000 688.400000 to grow.
688.400000 693.920000 But I failed a lot and that's a part of key chain leadership, letting people fail.
693.920000 699.120000 And I remember one time I was a senior in high school and we had this spring lock-in called
699.120000 701.560000 YTO, which is youth takeover.
701.560000 707.680000 And the youth, like our leadership team, got to create this whole lock-in, the entire experience
707.680000 715.240000 and I was ahead of it and I had good ideas and some that failed and I just focused on the
715.240000 717.160000 negative, the bad.
717.160000 723.600000 Because so often throughout my entire life, I had been told that I wasn't smart or that
723.600000 727.760000 I couldn't accomplish things or that, you know, my friends would compare my abilities
727.760000 731.240000 to theirs and then I would always be torn down for it.
731.240000 736.400000 And so that was a struggle for me, even in high schools, just trying to understand what
736.400000 740.040000 I was supposed to be doing in ministry and then with the rest of my life.
740.040000 748.180000 And so as I continued in school and seminary and in ministry, that negative thought of like
748.180000 753.920000 you're not good enough or you're not smart enough has constantly stuck with me even to this
753.920000 755.760000 day in my 30s.
755.760000 761.480000 Another thing that I struggle with is being a woman in ministry.
761.480000 765.800000 So we have a lot of fantastic women on our staff who continue to encourage and pour into
765.800000 772.680000 me but I've had negative experiences with women in ministry and I've also had negative experiences
772.680000 776.600000 with men telling me I should not be in ministry because I'm a woman.
776.600000 780.700000 So that's another thing that I struggle with of like I feel like I have to keep up, I feel
780.700000 785.180000 like I have to compare, I feel like I have to be perfect and those are all lies from
785.180000 786.180000 the enemy.
786.180000 790.840000 So that's why I specifically put that portion in my sermon of Jesus doesn't expect perfection
790.840000 795.160000 from us just obedience like you were saying and that was to me.
795.160000 799.200000 That was something that I wanted to tell myself because I'm like I don't have to be the
799.200000 802.760000 best, I don't have to be the smartest and I don't want to be, I just don't want to feel
802.760000 807.800000 less than and often when we feel less than we don't want to use our gifts or step out
807.800000 811.600000 of our comfort zones to do that teaching leadership.
811.600000 819.200000 How does that combination of empowering, bringing someone up while also letting them
819.200000 820.200000 fail?
820.200000 823.400000 How is failure empowering I guess would be the question?
823.400000 829.440000 I think a lot of times we learn more when we fail in that we realize what may have worked
829.440000 834.760000 and what didn't work and then we decide okay how are we going to grow from this and like
834.760000 839.440000 I said that one experience a while ago made me realize okay maybe what I thought was
839.440000 844.760000 going to be good wasn't let's change it to make it better for next time and I think
844.760000 849.080000 that's something that we really need to tell our students is because a lot of times they're
849.080000 854.600000 struggling with this idealistic thought of I have to do everything right because that's
854.600000 860.240000 what society is telling them but Jesus says the opposite he was like you can mess up I'll
860.240000 864.000000 be here to help you and that's what we also say like hey you're not going to get everything
864.000000 868.360000 right I want to help you so that you can grow and get better.
868.360000 872.880000 And effective leaders are usually the ones that have some humility.
872.880000 873.880000 Yes.
873.880000 879.000000 And that kind of builds that character as you fail you see that it's not actually about
879.000000 885.480000 you and that the failure is not defining you right the success is also not defining you
885.480000 894.040000 exactly right and that also makes me think of you know test small fail small is a term I've
894.040000 901.040000 learned in kind of my work life but I also think of there have been studies and all these
901.040000 906.760000 things that are shown in the arena of law and medicine you know people go to med school and
906.760000 911.640000 then they they have hands-on experience right it's not that their training doesn't end in
911.640000 917.040000 the classroom they go to residency they they shadow other doctors law schools are starting
917.040000 921.120000 to look at kind of this apprentice model that it's actually more successful when you're
921.120000 925.920000 doing what it is you've been trained to do and so I think in the in the church sense
925.920000 931.320000 in the spiritual sense that's exactly what you're talking about it's exactly what Christ
931.320000 937.280000 modeled he had people that came along as his disciples as his apprentices and I can't
937.280000 941.440000 remember this is something you had said or was I picked this up somewhere else but just
941.440000 946.600000 how young the disciples actually were a lot of them and that we I tend to think as someone
946.600000 949.160000 who grew up in the church and heard all these stories about the disciples that they were
949.160000 954.320000 just like middle aged successful businessmen they've been fishermen for 40 years and other
954.320000 959.800000 whatever that's actually not really the case and so maybe you could talk a little bit about
959.800000 965.280000 how you've seen kind of that apprentice model that bringing them along getting hands-on
965.280000 970.480000 has worked and what that's kind of led to specifically in my life I interned with my youth
970.480000 977.200000 pastor our children's pastor our worship leaders and because they showed me the way again how
977.200000 981.680000 to do things and also allowed me to realize how not to do things that is what gave me the
981.680000 986.960000 confidence to be able to do what I do today and so it's important that we help people behind
986.960000 992.720000 us do the same thing so if we have a student who is really talented maybe with graphic
992.720000 997.840000 design we can say hey I want to mentor you in that area let me give you some keys to work
997.840000 1003.320000 on our social media which that's a small tool that allows kids to grow in their confidence
1003.320000 1008.520000 and in their skills we have other students who maybe want to share their testimony and
1008.520000 1013.960000 so we mentor them and work with them on what that means to help them share their stories mentorship
1013.960000 1018.520000 is extremely valuable and important because if they're not going to learn it from us they're
1018.520000 1023.080000 going to learn it from somewhere else and they may not be learning exactly what crisis
1023.080000 1029.000000 is empowering them to do back to the disciples so they were people back in Hebrew school when
1029.000000 1033.480000 they were kids so all the boys and the girls went to Hebrew school and they were called I think
1033.480000 1039.080000 Talmud and so they would learn you know kind of the basics everyone would but only the smarter kids
1039.080000 1044.680000 got to continue on and learning with the rabbis for years and years the rest of them would go into
1044.680000 1051.080000 family businesses so fishermen carpenters stuff like that these Talmud who continued to walk with
1051.080000 1055.800000 the rabbis literally were told you have to be so close to them you have to know them so well at
1055.800000 1061.880000 the dust from their sandals would get on you and so when Jesus was calling his disciples he didn't
1061.880000 1067.640000 call the Talmud he didn't call the smartest people he called the fishermen the tax collectors and he
1067.640000 1072.840000 said I want you to walk with me and so Jesus mentored them they were not like I said the best and the
1072.840000 1076.840000 brightest but Jesus said I see something in you and I want to empower that in you and that's what we
1076.840000 1083.800000 want to do with our students as well they were the Hebrew school dropouts yeah Hebrew school dropouts
1083.800000 1090.360000 that was terribly off pitch okay but yeah that's that's what Jesus did and we want to model that
1090.360000 1095.160000 with everyone else because again it's not about being the best it's about God's giving you something
1095.160000 1102.280000 let's help you ignite that that's teaching leadership nice one of the things that I sometimes
1102.280000 1111.080000 have trouble doing and those that no one love me can attest to this I have trouble letting things go
1111.080000 1118.840000 so I tend to be a key lender I give the key but then I'm like wait a minute yeah are you doing it right
1118.840000 1124.440000 right now that's the thing that I have trouble with because to quote Johnny Johnston because
1124.440000 1130.360000 I listened to his sermon he said it's just so easy for me to do everything myself to just take
1130.360000 1135.880000 the reins like is it wouldn't it be faster it would get done correctly but I will give an example
1135.880000 1141.800000 maybe I've mentioned this before but when my son was very young he had a fascination
1141.800000 1148.600000 for putting toys in the toilet which I think most children do and I thought you know what
1148.600000 1153.480000 let's turn this into something which I was I taught him how to clean a toilet and man I tell you
1153.480000 1158.840000 what that cake can clean a toilet and he still does that's his chore the first times he cleaned the
1158.840000 1165.480000 toilet yeah did I have to go back in oh yeah and wipe up the entire bathroom with bleach right but
1165.480000 1173.640000 I can just hold on to that silly example and think about that as I approach my new initiative
1173.640000 1178.200000 that I'm working on with the bike club or just even empowering him to do things now like
1178.200000 1182.760000 I was going to be learning to drive soon all that kind of stuff that's something that I personally
1182.760000 1186.760000 struggle with and since we're interviewing you I'm going to turn that into a question
1186.760000 1197.080000 tell us about a time that you gave over a key so it could be in the current role that you're
1197.080000 1209.000000 in or in the past that you gave over a key and it did not go well okay that's easy um I'm just
1209.000000 1214.120000 going to go back to what you said a second ago of like it could be faster if we just do it ourselves
1214.120000 1222.200000 it may seem that way but once you actually teach and empower someone else then they got it and
1222.200000 1229.960000 they roll with it and you really do save time so I'll get back to that in a second but one one area
1229.960000 1238.520000 that I've seen it not go well is one way is just leading a game so for example it's just a small
1238.520000 1244.040000 little task of hey you're a teenager you probably know it's super fun why don't you plan a game this week
1244.040000 1251.000000 let me know the plan and we'll go with it so they decided they were going to create this elaborate
1251.000000 1257.640000 game sent me all the information and I'm like this sounds amazing run with it we got there
1257.640000 1264.360000 and they were reading the instructions off the paper but kind of stumbling with it and so hands
1264.360000 1267.880000 are going up I don't understand what how do we play what do we do what is this like and they're like
1267.880000 1273.480000 I really don't know I actually didn't prepare and I was like oh gosh here we go and I was like
1273.480000 1278.040000 hey guys let me kind of help let's answer some questions let's play the game so we started playing
1278.040000 1282.200000 the game and we were like five minutes in and no one was doing it right everyone was running around
1282.200000 1289.080000 completely confused and my first instinct was shoot this is not going well but then my second
1289.080000 1294.600000 instinct was okay let me pull that person aside let's regroup let's figure out what didn't work
1294.600000 1299.640000 let's play it again round two and so when we played round two it was more exciting more engaging
1299.640000 1305.800000 everyone understood and that student said okay I need to know what to work on in the future let me
1305.800000 1310.920000 prepare better number two maybe let me practice explaining the game to someone so that they know how
1310.920000 1316.520000 to play and I can be a better messenger and the number three at the end of the night they were
1316.520000 1320.520000 asking other kids hey like how could I have done this better or what would you like to play in the
1320.520000 1326.120000 future which again gave them the empowerment to say how can I receive feedback and number two I
1326.120000 1331.960000 want to do this again so it wasn't about shoot I messed up it was about okay how can I take how I
1331.960000 1337.400000 messed up and make it better for next time and again to me that I could have just picked a game out of
1337.400000 1343.000000 my hat and it could have been faster but it's not about necessarily making it fast or perfect it's
1343.000000 1348.200000 about letting that person grow in their skills and if it takes a little extra time it takes a little
1348.200000 1356.120000 extra time and it's also every other student that was there saw all of that happen saw you letting
1356.120000 1362.600000 someone figure it out and thinking to themselves perhaps hey this is a pretty great place to be where
1362.600000 1368.200000 we get to maybe I want to chance at that next time you know right it's the ripple effects right
1368.200000 1380.760000 for the child that feels so much pressure to perform at a perfect level that is life giving yeah
1381.560000 1388.040000 let's say I'm a middle schooler our high schooler and everything around me is telling me
1388.040000 1395.000000 that I need to be perfect always here are these youtube sensations that post these amazing
1395.000000 1404.760000 songs and then become overnight successes sports idols that perform at super high level so many times
1404.760000 1411.480000 our kids don't see the blood this way the tears the pain that went into that they only see
1411.480000 1419.320000 the result and if they can't succeed then they don't even try yeah we have to fight against that
1419.320000 1425.160000 message that is false advertising the funny thing for me is I'm not a perfectionist by any means
1425.160000 1431.320000 I don't care do I want it done well because we're doing it for Jesus absolutely but Jesus never said
1431.320000 1437.240000 get it perfect and so that's what I try to instill in our students of let's try it let's just do
1437.240000 1444.840000 it you know and if it doesn't turn out as smoothly as we wish who cares we tried let's keep trying
1444.840000 1448.600000 that's something that I really try to ensure that our students know and especially with me like
1448.600000 1453.960000 I don't ever want to come across that I've everything all together and I will let them know hey
1453.960000 1459.000000 I struggle I mess up I didn't just struggle mess up when I was your age I still do it to this day
1459.000000 1463.560000 I don't have anything together I'm a mess and I think that's also a part of keychain leadership is
1463.560000 1468.840000 allowing people to see your transparency and your vulnerability in that it's not about our skills
1468.840000 1473.640000 and what we can do it's about who we are and how God is still shaping us which really it goes
1473.640000 1481.800000 back to that humility piece that we talked about and also brings to mind what Mary Beth and I do
1481.800000 1489.800000 here on this podcast is hey I have a great idea let's record ourselves the whole world can hear
1489.800000 1496.680000 and let's tell everybody how bad we screw things up let's tell everybody about our shortcomings
1496.680000 1505.080000 let's but in the hopes that I think about that verse is Paul writes but I am being poured out like
1505.080000 1515.000000 a drink offering my life as a sacrifice like I'm here by the grace of God so many ways that he's
1515.000000 1521.880000 saved me from myself and let's talk about it I mean let's recount the goodness let's recount the
1521.880000 1528.520000 things that God has done has been such a theme for Mary Beth and I these last few episodes of really
1528.520000 1536.440000 talking about and recounting the ways that God has redeemed us and here we are talking about this
1536.440000 1544.520000 totally other topic of keychain leadership but yet here's the theme again being a keychain leader
1544.520000 1552.840000 can really just mean being transparent and being willing to talk about how difficult life really is
1552.840000 1559.000000 yeah I mean that's what the entirety of scripture is about too right Jesus and God's grace
1559.000000 1565.080000 on every single one of us sinners yes he's given us gifts and skills but he knew we were never gonna
1565.080000 1571.240000 get everything right and I love reading about people in scripture who were on the highest of mountains
1571.240000 1577.160000 but also messed up and God still called them he knew from the very beginning what they were gonna do
1577.160000 1581.480000 and not do right and he still said I have a plan for you and a purpose for you and I love you
1581.480000 1585.640000 and he says the same thing to us and that's the same thing I want to instill in our students
1585.640000 1591.480000 is that like you can mess up right now go to God for grace and forgiveness and let's get up every
1591.480000 1600.440000 single day and try to be more like him can you talk a little bit about so this concept of keychain
1600.440000 1607.880000 leadership could be applied outside of the church yes and what you just said about continuing to come
1607.880000 1615.160000 back to the Lord he is the source of grace and mercy connect the dots for the listeners on how that
1615.160000 1620.360000 kind of spiritual growth and teaching leadership within the church why that's important within the
1620.360000 1625.240000 church and what the significance of that is within the body of Christ kids and students can hear
1625.240000 1631.960000 anywhere hey you've got great gifts let's use them in theater on the soccer field in business in
1631.960000 1638.840000 life they can be empowered in so many ways keychain leadership is not in a way solely for the church
1638.840000 1644.040000 the differences we're doing it because we want them to know that they have a place here and a
1644.040000 1649.640000 purpose here in the community and the family of God and so a lot of times if we don't empower our
1649.640000 1655.160000 students and our teenagers to use their God-given gifts in the church now they're gonna sit here
1655.160000 1660.120000 on the sidelines they're going to be talked at they're going to have to listen to a lot of things but
1660.120000 1665.160000 never get to actually use those gifts and they're not going to stay they're going to say I don't want
1665.160000 1672.440000 to be a part of this whole Christian organization because I'm just sitting here and they want to be
1672.440000 1677.240000 a part they want to use what God's given them for the church for the glory of the church and a lot
1677.240000 1682.760000 of times our our the next generation is taught you're the future well time the future what am I doing
1682.760000 1687.960000 here now right I can go to the soccer field I can go to wherever else and be empowered but the
1687.960000 1694.680000 differences we're saying you have a purpose you have a role here it's not about what you can do it's
1694.680000 1699.720000 about what God can do through you so that's why there's a difference between it being secular and
1699.720000 1705.320000 non-secular again the concept could simply just be helping kids grow in their skills but the
1705.320000 1710.360000 differences we're empowering students to use what God's given them to help the next generation
1710.360000 1714.920000 to help people see who they are in Christ and and again really understand who their worth is
1714.920000 1723.400000 and it's always in who Jesus calls them to be I think of when as an adult I have moved or changed
1723.400000 1731.080000 churches or shifted communities and as an as an adult you still feel that need to belong to feel
1731.080000 1737.800000 a part of your local church community as a believer it can take time it can be awkward there can
1737.800000 1744.840000 be hurdles and so to have that foundation growing up for the kids and students that are in our church now
1744.840000 1752.360000 to be able to look back and recall oh I know what this is supposed to look like I know who I am
1752.360000 1757.320000 I know what the body of Christ is I know that I belong to him that's going to carry through for
1757.320000 1763.400000 the rest of their lives you know when they're 40 years old and looking for a new church as an adult
1763.400000 1769.000000 it's not going to be this thing that's going to immediately turn them away because they know it
1769.000000 1776.760000 already they know they belong already I was thinking a lot lately about this concept of ownership
1776.760000 1785.160000 we often fall into the role of consumers I'll just use food for an example since they were talking
1785.160000 1789.960000 about it earlier it's very easy to go to the grocery store to pick out the food that we want to eat
1789.960000 1793.800000 bring it home sometimes it's already prepared for us and we just need to heat it up sometimes it's
1793.800000 1804.040000 even hot we can eat it in our car but we have sometimes missed all of the work that goes into producing
1804.040000 1811.560000 that food if we're growing food in our gardens we have a better picture of that before making maybe
1811.560000 1819.000000 bread from scratch we might have a better picture of that but in God's word he talks a lot about
1819.000000 1825.400000 the work of our hands think of the proverbs think of just the stories that Jesus told the comparisons
1825.400000 1833.480000 that he made there's a lot of analogies or stories about the work that we do producing fruit
1833.480000 1843.400000 investing into the things that we are going to be using is biblical and it can be something as simple
1843.400000 1852.440000 as working on the trails that you're riding your mountain bike on because I don't want the kids on
1852.440000 1858.840000 my team to be just consumers of the trails I want them to understand the work that goes into
1858.840000 1867.560000 having that privilege just like as parents we don't want to just give our kids money or buy them
1867.560000 1876.200000 anything they need we want them to understand the value of work and that it takes intentionality
1876.200000 1883.080000 this idea of the key chain leadership is really creating opportunities for ownership
1883.080000 1893.320000 for our children not to just be served yeah but to serve others so that they can be served
1893.320000 1899.720000 themselves yeah so what's really cool is that I heard a quote from Mark Hall years ago that said
1899.720000 1906.200000 we're not the audience of Christ we're the body of Christ and so often people come to church and think
1906.200000 1912.520000 let me grab my coffee let me sit down let me listen let me leave that's not being a part of the church
1912.520000 1916.920000 that's walking into a movie you're not using the gifts that God's giving you to pour into the body
1916.920000 1921.160000 and be a part of the body and what's really cool is like you were saying a lot of people don't know
1921.160000 1927.240000 what goes into either a Sunday morning church service or a youth group night or anything in the church
1927.240000 1932.280000 because we're taught so much let me be a consumer and so something that it was really cool it happened
1932.280000 1939.160000 last Sunday night was our high school ministry led by Gustavo Castaneda he had a service fair
1939.160000 1945.000000 and so the high schoolers and the young adults they got together and they learned what it meant to
1945.000000 1949.960000 serve in our church and so many people who lead in our church like Sarah Madison our children's
1949.960000 1955.240000 pastor was there Allison Kellisek who is our special needs director so many people who serve in our
1955.240000 1960.280000 church came and they they did different stations where all our students got to see different parts
1960.280000 1964.280000 of our church like they got to be on the stage with Keras Haynes and do worship and be behind the scenes
1964.280000 1969.800000 with Stephen McCurran and do sound and the whole purpose of that was to show them like hey it takes
1969.800000 1976.120000 a village of people to do the work on a Sunday morning to glorify Jesus or a Sunday night and so
1976.120000 1981.400000 we would love to have you be a part of that so it wasn't just showing them what happens it was saying
1981.400000 1986.200000 how can you be a part of that and again that goes back to the key chain leadership portion of
1986.200000 1991.800000 where not just consumers let's pour into you let's see where God is gifting you and let's get you
1991.800000 1996.840000 plugged in so that you can be that body of Christ that we're talking about and you're setting an
1996.840000 2004.440000 expectation there the expectation is participation and involvement and service and engagement the
2004.440000 2009.400000 expectation is not consumerism right and so setting that tone I think is an important part of it too
2009.400000 2016.520000 and a lot of times people are afraid to step into roles of leadership or even they don't even like
2016.520000 2021.640000 hearing the phrase key chain leadership because people just think I just want to serve or I'm not
2021.640000 2027.560000 leader quality and it's not about who's following you it's not about how many people you're in charge
2027.560000 2034.600000 of it's simply about how are you serving and how are you influencing people so you could influence
2034.600000 2040.600000 someone with the way that you just use your kindness to encourage other people you can be a leader
2040.600000 2044.520000 in the ways that you serve behind the scenes you don't have to be the person on the stage to be a
2044.520000 2049.880000 leader you just have to use what God's given you to help other people grows kingdom even something
2049.880000 2060.440000 as simple as a real smile with an eye to eye connection can really make a difference especially
2060.440000 2065.400000 at a Sunday morning oh yeah and I think going back to the point of perfectionism that we were talking
2065.400000 2072.040000 about earlier people walk into church me included sometimes and we put our best faces on and it's like
2072.040000 2076.920000 no this should be a place where we can be our total and normal selves and I think being a leader
2076.920000 2082.040000 is showing that is recognizing like hey I see someone who's maybe not having the best day let me go
2082.040000 2086.280000 over and talk to them and maybe let me share my experience of also not having the best day so that
2086.280000 2091.000000 we can kind of come together I think in that alone that's a simple way to be a leader as well
2091.000000 2095.400000 it's just kind of stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something the way Jesus would
2095.400000 2101.560000 that no one else wants to do maybe just answering the question truthfully when someone says how are
2101.560000 2108.360000 you good start yep so when you go back to something you said earlier when you were answering the question
2108.360000 2113.160000 about if it's easier to do it yourself or to let it go you said that you wanted to tell us a story
2113.160000 2117.640000 yes please go ahead another part of key chain leadership as I'm talking about you don't have to be
2117.640000 2122.840000 on the front lines you can be behind the scenes and so one way that our students are key chain
2122.840000 2129.320000 leaders in this area is we have check-in computers so all our students have to check in and then that's
2129.320000 2133.880000 how we know they're there and at the end of the night someone has to put away those check-in computers
2133.880000 2139.720000 and typically it's me but all of our students are constantly saying hey how can I help what can I
2139.720000 2145.800000 do and that's being a leader and so I said to two students I'm going to teach you how to shut down
2145.800000 2151.080000 these computers and put them away and it took a little while because it's not just turning a button
2151.080000 2156.360000 off and you're done I had to teach them and show them at least one or two times and that took some
2156.360000 2162.680000 extra time on my part ever since then every time I walk down the stairs at the end of WDS those
2162.680000 2167.480000 computers are away and that's one less thing I have to do and again it's not about me just like
2167.480000 2171.800000 handing off responsibilities so don't have to do it it's me just giving them one little thing one
2171.800000 2177.160000 little task that they can do and they're leading in that area and getting the job done so did it
2177.160000 2182.280000 take me a little extra time in the beginning sure but has it saved me time yes it has and has it
2182.280000 2187.160000 powered students to do that and then also want to go the extra mile yes that's an extra way that
2187.160000 2192.600000 keychain leadership is super valuable and I would argue that that gives them ownership so if they
2192.600000 2197.640000 are in church on a Sunday morning and they see something amiss with one of those computers they
2197.640000 2203.480000 can just step right in exactly they know what to do I love that like I said it's not just about
2203.480000 2208.200000 being the person who has to teach or lead the Bible study it's about hey are you good with tech
2208.200000 2213.400000 great let me show you how we can use this and how you can be empowered and so many of our students
2213.400000 2220.520000 on Sunday nights are saying can I do the slides can I give the announcements can I set up the games
2220.520000 2225.800000 it's so many areas where they're realizing I have a role here in a part here I'm wanted and valued
2225.800000 2232.040000 here again not from what I can offer but because of what Jesus has empowered me to do and what I can
2232.040000 2238.520000 help with I know that in my own sons experience it means something to him to be a part of the team
2238.520000 2244.520000 for summer blast to help with the slides to do the different things in fact when I pick him up
2244.520000 2249.960000 from WDS I always know that I'm going to come at least five minutes after the time because he's
2249.960000 2255.880000 going to be helping clean up yep and he wants to yes and I'm thankful for that I noticed he is also
2255.880000 2263.320000 starting a sport in school and it's requires some cleanup and I was waiting outside for him yesterday
2263.320000 2269.880000 and it was the time and it was after the time and I was thinking oh boy I thought I'll bet he's
2269.880000 2276.520000 cleaning up he came out to the car I said did you clean up he said yeah and you know he mentioned
2276.520000 2280.520000 some other kids he said and then they accidentally knocked all the chairs over so I helped him pick
2280.520000 2287.320000 him up that's a leader I know and then I was like I felt a lot of I guess recrimination because I
2287.320000 2292.760000 had been in the car going come on it's taking so long you know and then here my kid is being the
2292.760000 2300.680000 person that I want him to be yeah I mean that's a lesson to parents give your kids space give your
2300.680000 2308.520000 kid a chance to screw up and hold your judgment let them have a chance to get toilet water all
2308.520000 2316.680000 for the path for it sounds like it'll happen regardless this is true this is true oh he's a great kid
2316.680000 2321.480000 I mean you both have wonderful kids I just work more with teenagers yeah they're coming for you Sarah
2321.480000 2329.880000 I can't wait the day I met him what was he doing stacking chairs I'm not making this up I'm pretty
2329.880000 2335.160000 sure it was February 19th of 2023 you'll wow something I didn't tell you my fun facts I'm the
2335.160000 2340.600000 human calendar and so I can remember a specific memory I don't remember everything but I can
2340.600000 2346.520000 remember the majority of things and I like we were cleaning up in the commons and he was just
2346.520000 2350.520000 stacking chairs and I was like hi I'm Sara what's your name he was in sixth grade I think at that
2350.520000 2355.960000 point and we were just having a conversation and what I love about students is when they say how are
2355.960000 2361.800000 you like thank you for caring about me so he not only was stacking chairs but he was making conversation
2361.800000 2367.800000 and it was so beautiful to see a student I had just met already in a way doing that key chain
2367.800000 2372.920000 leadership without even knowing what it meant he's not the only one so many other students do it
2372.920000 2379.160000 as well and our young adults and kids gets really cool to see them just do simple tasks I've definitely
2379.160000 2388.840000 seen a shift in our church over the last few years in this area so Sarah our youth program has a
2388.840000 2394.680000 cohort which you can explain for us as you answer this question how has key chain leadership
2394.680000 2404.280000 impacted the growth of that cohort so our cohort was started I believe in the fall of 2022 so before
2404.280000 2410.600000 I got there I have no partners by Jordan Lichten and Gustavo Castanilla that they are high school
2410.600000 2416.840000 pastors at both campuses and they realized we needed students they wanted to revamp the ministry
2416.840000 2422.200000 and they said we've got to empower our students it can't be just us doing this and so the cohort
2422.200000 2427.640000 meets about once a month and they plan what are called our summit nights which was also formed in
2427.640000 2434.040000 part from Sofia Castanilla who is now one of our 56-year leaders so this key chain leadership has
2434.040000 2438.840000 been a part since she was in high school but now she's leading but they meet once a month and they
2438.840000 2444.280000 plan our summit nights which is a night for both campuses to come together we have a student
2444.280000 2450.520000 led worship team all of our students on the cohort plan everything from the night to games to guest
2450.520000 2456.040000 speakers they decorate they clean up they set up every single thing and so that before the whole
2456.040000 2461.560000 process an idea of key chain leadership was already in place because Jordan and Gustavo realized
2461.560000 2466.680000 we need our students to know they have a place here and it wasn't an overnight success it wasn't
2466.680000 2471.240000 that our students just became this amazing group of friends immediately and that they just started
2471.240000 2476.360000 leading with no issues and no problems Jordan and Gustavo spent a lot of time trying to just
2476.360000 2481.320000 power into them and power them but they also did it biblically again it wasn't just hey we're here
2481.320000 2485.320000 to do a job they would sit down and do devotions and they would re-scripture together and have
2485.320000 2489.960000 Bible studies because they said this is something that was important to Jesus it's important to us
2489.960000 2496.600000 and ever since then our students have just run with it and they're not just leading in cohort
2496.600000 2501.160000 we have some of our students now on the adult worship team we have students who are sharing their
2501.160000 2506.360000 testimonies some are teaching some are not just leading announcements but they're also going out
2506.360000 2512.120000 into their schools and being ambassadors there for Christ because they're seeing so much growth
2512.120000 2517.480000 within themselves emotionally and spiritually that they're saying I want to take what Jesus has
2517.480000 2522.360000 given me here in our church out into this broken world and I want to empower my friends and encourage
2522.360000 2527.960000 them as well so it's been an amazing life changing thing for our students that's kind of gone year
2527.960000 2532.600000 after year so I think we're in our third group of cohort and every year they just keep getting
2532.600000 2536.520000 stronger and better and and I'm excited to see how they continue to grow with the rest of this year
2536.520000 2544.920000 and and years to come it creates a culture of student led directions student I guess student
2544.920000 2549.960000 leadership right Mary Beth she's my editor I'm the grammar police she's the grammar lady me too
2549.960000 2556.040000 I got my degree in English oh oh another fun fact a lot to talk about oh we're gonna have to do
2556.040000 2565.080000 this again can we as you've mentioned the cohort is grown but it's created a culture within the youth
2565.080000 2573.320000 program in our church that kids now are seeing what it is that they can become yeah they're looking
2573.320000 2580.600000 the younger generations your boys can look at these kids and say wow that's I see myself there
2580.600000 2587.160000 is very difficult to become something that you never have modeled for you right what I wanted to do
2587.160000 2594.680000 was to selfishly pick your brain a little bit about how these concepts could be used outside
2594.680000 2602.040000 the church yeah realizing that they're based in scripture that the mandate that we have comes from
2602.040000 2611.560000 Jesus but that also all wisdom is God's wisdom how can we use some of these concepts that we're
2611.560000 2618.520000 talking about in other areas in our lives again just seeing a student or a teenager let's say a school
2618.520000 2624.440000 setting where you literally are not allowed to say hey this is a biblical concept this is what
2624.440000 2632.200000 Jesus would do right you can still bring key chain leadership into that arena by empowering
2632.200000 2640.360000 kids or whomever to use their skills the way that you bring Jesus into it is through your prayer
2640.360000 2645.320000 is through your encouragement your light where Matthew 516 says let your light shine before
2645.320000 2649.720000 men that others would see your good works and glorify your father in heaven so you empowering
2649.720000 2657.720000 students or teenagers to do whatever gods empowered them to do you then pray over that you encourage
2657.720000 2661.960000 that in them and hopefully they'll be able to see that you're different and then maybe they'll
2661.960000 2667.480000 recognize the importance of finding Jesus but regardless they're being empowered to still grow
2667.480000 2671.160000 and use their skills because like you were saying earlier they're told everywhere else they have to be
2671.160000 2675.480000 perfect at least if you're just giving them some responsibilities you're saying hey I still see
2675.480000 2680.200000 the goodness in you and I want you to use those gifts I think about when scripture teaches us
2680.200000 2687.400000 to model Christ and praying for the peace and prosperity of the city and that in every arena
2687.400000 2693.480000 that we touch whether it's our community whether it's the schools whether it's workplace as Sarah
2693.480000 2699.320000 mentioned all wisdom is God's wisdom and we know that when we're living in accordance with
2699.880000 2706.760000 God's design and God's plan it leads to peace and prosperity of our city and I think that that's
2706.760000 2712.280000 the carryover that came to mind as well is that when you're loving people well when you're
2712.280000 2718.120000 empowering them well and doing it in a way that is the way that God teaches us to live
2718.120000 2724.280000 it's going to have a positive benefit you might get resistance but like Sarah saying if you're
2724.840000 2731.480000 approaching it with humility with prayer there is good in that and sometimes it's just being the good
2731.480000 2736.680000 in the community and what you're involved in that helps carry the torch forward so to speak
2736.680000 2744.600000 as far as carrying this into the world or a school setting in my particular case maybe a sports team
2744.600000 2753.720000 I like this concept of you're not just planning what to do but you're also working with them
2753.720000 2760.760000 in the church setting having devotion so to me that means that if I'm going to be leading a team of
2760.760000 2765.720000 students or if I'm going to be working with or empowering a team of students I guess would be the
2765.720000 2774.840000 right verbiage I should also spend time investing in who they are becoming yes and giving them more
2774.840000 2781.880000 than just oh this is how you put the computer away but hey let's talk about the things that we're
2781.880000 2788.360000 struggling with let's talk about stuff that kids on our team are struggling with or how can we
2788.360000 2799.320000 become better versions of ourselves well mcdonut as we try to wrap our brains around
2799.320000 2806.440000 everything that key take leadership can be can you remind us again let's imagine we're writing
2806.440000 2810.840000 a five paragraph essay now we're in our conclusion let's do it can you wrap up
2810.840000 2816.920000 you chain leadership and what it isn't isn't in a nice little package for us yeah so there are
2816.920000 2823.720000 three types of key leaders so there are key hoarders and they're the micromanagers who hold on to
2823.720000 2828.120000 everything because they think I know how to do this I will do it better than you don't touch it
2828.120000 2834.040000 then there are key lenders as Sarah was mentioning earlier and I certainly have been that where
2834.040000 2839.560000 we give a few responsibilities and we want to take them back like you can do this for a little bit
2839.560000 2845.240000 but I can do it better so backup and there are those key chain leaders who literally see the best
2845.240000 2849.720000 in people and the worst in people and say you're still going to do a great job I want to give you
2849.720000 2855.880000 the opportunity to use your gifts let's roll with them and let me help mentor you in the process so
2855.880000 2861.240000 the question I would just ask our listeners is which one are you and which one can you become
2862.360000 2868.200000 and so Christ always modeled what it meant to be a key chain leader like I said he called people who
2868.200000 2873.960000 didn't have the the best resumes and yet he knew that they were going to do great things in his name
2873.960000 2879.320000 and so that's the same mindset we need to have as key chain leaders who can we invest in
2879.320000 2882.920000 and how can we help them grow and be the people that Jesus called them to be
2882.920000 2888.600000 on that note on that note it's time for some lightning round questions it is time for some lightning
2888.600000 2896.360000 round questions so you're in the hot seat okay we are on the spot with Sarah B. Mick donut
2896.360000 2905.560000 all right you ready first question I'm ready what have you been listening to lately music podcast
2905.560000 2910.280000 whatever it might be oh goodness okay I've been listening to a lot of Matt Hanson lately
2910.280000 2915.960000 oh I don't know who that is yeah he's really great but Alex Warren those are two of my favorites
2915.960000 2922.120000 recently these musicians they are musicians the only so I don't really listen to podcasts either I
2922.120000 2926.440000 listen to the office ladies and you kind of remind me of them I just listened to that for the first
2926.440000 2931.720000 time this week they're so fun yeah yeah so that's what I've been listening to nice all right Sarah
2931.720000 2938.760000 what you got you mentioned food I love food imagine this you've had a pretty bad day
2938.760000 2945.480000 there's something that will bring you comfort if you eat it what is that food oh my gosh
2945.480000 2951.640000 a cheeseburger and/or chocolate cake mmm I love chocolate cake but recently I've been eating a lot of
2951.640000 2958.520000 cookie dough so probably that as well I think that may have been Leslie's answer when she was here we
2958.520000 2962.920000 asked her when you put your kids to bed you know they're not gonna interrupt you and you can go eat
2962.920000 2968.520000 whatever it is you want I think she said she keeps cookie dough like in the freezer yeah there we go
2968.520000 2974.120000 sweet lauren's. mmm I think the message is I need to get some cookie dough for my freezer I would say so
2975.160000 2981.560000 alright next question you used to live a couple counties over maybe one county over now now that
2981.560000 2985.720000 you've been in Chester County a little while what's your favorite thing about living in Chester
2985.720000 2993.080000 County Pennsylvania my friends so I used to live in Delco and I didn't love the area because it was
2993.080000 2999.720000 very congested and so being out here kind of reminds me of home like Texas Virginia everyone is
2999.720000 3005.080000 friendly there's a lot of space I love that but I also get to see my friends and my church family
3005.080000 3009.880000 because my commute was over an hour one way that I did for almost a year and a half and I didn't get
3009.880000 3014.600000 to hang out with people and have my community so I love being here for that reason and we would have
3014.600000 3020.680000 probably had to do this interview over zoom yes which is not as fun right you live now 13 minutes
3020.680000 3027.080000 from me and this is my day off so I was like 13 minutes I can do that wow we should like feed her
3027.080000 3033.000000 afterwards or something since it's her day off oh no I mean if it's cookie dough or cheeseburger do you
3033.000000 3037.560000 have cheeseburger and chocolate cake downstairs I don't know I've chocolate chip banana muffins yes I
3037.560000 3046.040000 will gladly inhale those thank you okay here's my question for you you are a person that is beautiful
3046.040000 3055.480000 oh thank you on the inside and the outside thank you what was the last beauty item that you
3055.480000 3062.840000 purchased for yourself like makeup anything that you consider to be enhancing your appearance
3063.160000 3073.400000 oh um it was on February 7th it was a Friday I bought a lot like I had to restock it was everything
3073.400000 3079.880000 like my mascara my powder my it was everything yeah that's awesome I needed it all because I was like
3079.880000 3086.600000 we're out and I don't want to look like trash every day so do enjoy like I'm I'm I'm way more on
3086.600000 3091.160000 like the tom boy side of things so I feel like makeup is like a chore but is that something like
3091.160000 3096.600000 you enjoy like you get into it you like to experiment no no when I was in high school I would watch
3096.600000 3102.360000 YouTube videos on how girls do their makeup and now I'm like if it takes me longer than seven minutes
3102.360000 3107.960000 I'm done yeah I've timed it and I'm like all right we're done for the day sometimes I do nothing and
3107.960000 3113.320000 it's like two minutes I'm like is what it is we're walking out the door my hat is off to you because
3113.320000 3118.760000 I usually like to leave the house a lipstick on that's kind of my baseline and then if I'm feeling like
3118.760000 3124.520000 I'm going to be in public I might put some powder on but I have to say maybe I'm the like I go the
3124.520000 3128.920000 tomboy direction as well hmm here's the thing for me I have really red cheeks I have nothing on
3128.920000 3134.120000 today not a thing and it's also where I'm wearing a hat and so if I don't wear like any foundation
3134.120000 3139.960000 I get this question all the time number one are you sick or are you tired like no this is my face
3139.960000 3147.320000 I'm sick and tired of that question! exactly go home and then they also ask have you been running
3147.320000 3154.200000 I don't run I love to exercise but no I don't run this is my face I look like this yeah exactly sit
3154.200000 3161.080000 down and be quiet oh that's funny I mean it's not but it is okay but also there are also days where
3161.080000 3166.280000 I do have to put a little like makeup on because I look so young that people are like who's the
3166.280000 3172.840000 youth pastor like it's me I know I look like I'm 18 but it's me yeah this is not necessarily a bad
3172.840000 3178.600000 thing oh gosh no someone the other day was like I bet you're like 25 and I was like that's why
3178.600000 3185.880000 you're my favorite but I'll take 25 yeah normally I'm like oh you look like you're 18 yeah just use
3185.880000 3191.160000 that to your advantage for the next however long okay however long that lasts yeah well and then
3191.160000 3198.120000 hopefully when you're 40 you'll look 20 or when you're 60 you'll look 40 I mean this is not
3198.120000 3203.560000 necessarily a bad thing I'm not complaining yeah just don't ask me why my face is red it's just my face
3203.560000 3209.320000 that's the best people are like you look tired thank you yeah right is that a question
3209.320000 3215.560000 exactly yep I had a follow up question of that the whole beauty on the inside and beauty on the
3215.560000 3221.000000 outside okay so we know you bought some makeup for the outside beauty what is something that you've
3221.000000 3229.480000 done for the inside beauty I haven't I'm gonna answer that honestly so I do struggle and someone
3229.480000 3234.200000 recently said to me I don't feel like you have insecurities and I'm like girl let me be honest
3234.200000 3240.200000 with you I have too many I honestly just have been struggling lately with that of like not feeling
3240.200000 3246.200000 good enough not feeling smart enough not feeling pretty enough anything anything that most of us deal
3246.200000 3252.840000 with. I could say that I would sit down and memorize my scripture and feel better or I would
3252.840000 3257.480000 sit at the piano and play and feel better and I haven't done any of that so I'm working on that
3257.480000 3263.320000 unfortunately I cannot end with an of a good answer but I will tell you that I am now thinking
3263.320000 3269.000000 about what I could be doing hey honesty is a beautiful thing yeah we appreciate the honesty
3269.000000 3276.840000 we do and the answer you gave was the right answer oh thank you you will make you feel better
3276.840000 3286.280000 that's exactly what I need is okay the very final thing Mary Beth and I have enjoyed having
3286.280000 3292.040000 the opportunity through this medium of our podcast to be able to set the record straight
3292.040000 3298.040000 is there anything that you can think of in your lifetime it could be from when you were a child
3298.040000 3304.760000 it could be from a previous job it could be from a previous relationship where you felt misunderstood
3304.760000 3313.880000 or that people really did not understand your intention and if so would you like to set the record
3313.880000 3325.880000 straight this is funny I don't like confrontation I absolutely hate it and so the person within me is
3325.880000 3330.440000 like yeah let them have it but then the other person within me is like they might listen to this
3330.440000 3338.840000 we don't want to cause strife but you know there's something you need to get off your chest
3338.840000 3344.840000 or just something maybe maybe serious questions more like something that's perceived about you
3344.840000 3349.000000 that you feel like yeah people often misunderstand and you're going to set the record straight
3349.000000 3353.560000 I don't know I think like the biggest thing I try to be is kind
3354.200000 3359.800000 and I know I don't always get that right but the biggest thing about me is I really do care
3359.800000 3366.360000 I really do care about people and my words may not always be correct I put my foot in my mouth so
3366.360000 3373.560000 often I may not always go out of my way to make someone feel good and I mess up in that realm
3373.560000 3379.800000 but the I want to set the record straight in that like I really do try to be kind and compassionate
3379.800000 3387.240000 and I am so sorry if I have made you feel like I'm not you heard it here maybe not first but you
3387.240000 3393.720000 heard it here ladies and gentlemen I love your answer because Mary Beth and I said very similar
3393.720000 3400.040000 things when we had the chance to set the record straight so all right well we're gonna wrap up
3400.040000 3407.000000 thank you in conclusion you will respond yes Sarah be Macdonut thank you for sharing your heart
3408.040000 3416.360000 yourself and the Lord with us and our listeners thank you thank you guys this is great
3416.360000 3428.360000 hey y'all Mary Beth here Sarah and I are so glad that you chose to listen to our podcast
3428.360000 3433.880000 and while we think that we're awesome friends to have we just wanted to clarify that we are not
3433.880000 3438.360000 mental health professionals and want you to know that this podcast should not take the place
3438.360000 3448.040000 of any paid professional advice all right here we go okay recite something recite something okay
3448.040000 3455.240000 let's do a scripture verse let's go with that one um verse Timothy 112 which is my favorite verse
3455.240000 3460.840000 is I think Jesus Christ our Lord who has given me strength that he would consider me trustworthy
3460.840000 3467.880000 appointing me to his service okay I think that's a good way to open our recording
3467.880000 3475.160000 oh especially since it has the name of our podcast and I have trunks where it does all right well
3475.160000 3482.440000 yeah it was almost as if we prepared for this using that verse which we actually didn't but we
3482.440000 3488.840000 did prepare by praying look at that God would lead our conversation and just did just did
3488.840000 3494.760000 he said delete the other stuff let's start with my word forget the form from here forget the
3494.760000 3501.720000 form of things do not dwell on the past see I am doing something new do you not perceive it wow
3501.720000 3509.400000 streams in the wasteland wow Isaiah something okay we're good for not that good
